This paper will present steady and unsteady flow field predictions for frigate and LHA class ships. Comparisons will be made to actual ship airwakes (from Kurt Long at PAX River) in the final paper. One of the authors (L. Long) sailed on the U.S.S. Saipan (an LHA) and helped obtain the data that will be used for comparison.
Our present results are qualitatively correct, and show that the key flow phenomena can be captured by using a steady-state code followed by the NLDE code. Future work will concentrate on more detailed comparisons to experiment and the inclusion of more geometrical features of the ships by using unstructured grids.
This code has been run on IBM SP2, SGI Power Challenge, and clusters of Pentium II machines. Performance results from these various computers will also be given.
